US wind energy industry had banner year in 2008

Impressive advances were made in 2008, despite the meltdown in financial markets, with 8,545MW of net generation capacity added and $17bn investment channeled into the economy, says the American Wind Energy Association.

Wind projects completed last year represented about 42% of all US new power generation capacity nationwide are were equivalent to taking more than 7m cars off the road, says AWEA in its annual report.

The industry brought 4,313MW of new wind power on line in fourth quarter alone, more than any single year except 2007.
