Obama: stimulus bill first step toward energy independence

President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed a $787.2bn economic stimulus bill into law, citing renewable energy as a key sector that will benefit from federal loan guarantees and other provisions in the package.

``This bill will enable us to double renewable energy production in three years and help transform how we use energy,’’ Obama told a crowd in Denver, Colorado. ``We are dealing with critical issues that have been neglected for too long.’’

The massive piece of legislation, a 63-37% mix of spending and tax cuts, includes $6bn in loan guarantees for biofuels development, and geothermal, solar and wind industries.

Formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, it also provides $11bn to modernize the nationwide electrical grid, almost 80 times $140mn in current funding…
