The Energy Department’s main responsibilities include the nation’s nuclear weapons programme, nuclear reactor production for the US Navy, radioactive waste disposal, energy conservation, energy-related research and domestic energy output.
Under Obama, DOE was lead agency in channeling unprecedented federal support for renewable and alternative energy development that included loan guarantees for some of the world’s largest solar and wind projects.
