The report, produced by consultancy Cambridge Econometrics for trade body RenewableUK, found that in 2013, wind energy reduced the country’s need to import coal by an estimated 4.9m tonnes, and natural gas by 1.4bn cubic metres.
RenewableUK says 56% of the UK’s gas supplies and 79% of its coal were imported in 2013. “Without wind energy, import levels would have been higher,” says the report.
