The nation approved approximately 1.3GW of residential PV and 798MW of onshore and offshore wind projects in the fiscal year to March 31, according to METI figures.

The new figures underscore how solar has been the main beneficiary of Japan’s generous feed-in tariff (FIT).

METI and the nation's utilities must approve proposed renewables projects as being eligible for the FIT. When a project is green-lighted it qualifies for the FIT rate at that time, but that does not necessarily mean the proposal will be developed and built.
