Recharge has commissioned exclusive photographs of China’s offshore wind test site in Rudong, where its leading manufacturers, such as Goldwind, Ming Yang and United Power, have deployed turbines that could soon be providing serious competition for Western suppliers.

At 182MW, Rudong is Asia’s largest offshore wind project.

It sits in a quiet spot at the mouth of the Yangtze River, a few hours’ drive north of Shanghai, in a county better known for its aquaculture than a high-tech industry.

Yet the project hosts equipment from virtually all of China’s top turbine manufacturers — Goldwind, Ming Yang, Shanghai Electric, Sinovel, CSIC, United Power, Sany and Dongfang Electric. It also has 21 of Siemens’ 2.38MW turbines.
