One of the highlights of EWEA 2013, the European Wind Energy Association conference in Vienna last month, was the CEO panel discussion entitled “Tough Times — Strategies of Wind Turbine Manufacturers”, chaired by Recharge editor-in-chief Ben Backwell.

The top-level officials on the platform dealt with the hard questions of how to industrialise and improve productivity in the turbine industry while dealing with stop-go markets and inconsistent government policies, local-content requirements in key emerging markets and the looming challenge of Asian competition.

Nobody on the panel was dodging the problems, but despite this, the mood was surprisingly optimistic. Here are some edited highlights of the debate.
