The election could seal the fate of economics minister Philipp Rösler

Voters in the German state of Lower Saxony will vote on Sunday in an election that could have big repercussions for the nation’s push to embrace renewable energy.

Opinion polls point to a tight race between the conservative-liberal coalition of incumbent State Premier David McAllister and the opposition of Social Democrats and Greens.

But the elections have significance beyond the coastal state. They are a first test ahead of federal elections in the autumn, when Chancellor Angela Merkel will try to gain a third term.

And Lower Saxony is key to Germany’s energy transition. With more than 7GW, the state’s currently hosts a quarter of Germany’s operating wind capacity.
