ANALYSIS: China's wind puzzle

The focus in China is on grid connection, rather than capacity-building

China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) is targeting 18GW of new wind power capacity for 2013, it said last week, boosting share prices at equipment makers but puzzling industry watchers.

NEA’s number, released after the agency’s annual conference, is ambitious, given that many analysts were predicting around 16-17GW of new capacity for this year and equipment makers had generally forecast even less.

NEA itself followed up on its target with news this week that the sector had only added 15.4GW of new capacity during 2012, down 4% on the previous year.

Some in the industry say figures from the China Wind Energy Association (CWEA) are more reliable. The industry body gathers data from suppliers and cross-checks with customers. It may release Log in to read complete article.
