CSP ‘has big potential but is expensive’, says reports

Although not yet commercially viable without government support, concentrating solar power (CSP) could provide between one third and half of Australia’s electricity needs by 2050, a report claims.

Realising the potential of Concentrating Solar Power in Australia, compiled by the consultancy IT Power for the government-backed Australian Solar Institute (ASI), forecasts that 2GW of CSP could be built by 2020 and up to 15GW in the next couple of decades — or nearly a third of the country’s total generation capacity of 50GW.

By 2050, CSP could provide half of the country’s energy if deployed at remote locations.
