Issues with turbine quality ‘are a real worry’

Quality issues with even the best-made turbines are a cause for concern at a time when the renewables industry faces ever greater scrutiny by the public and politicians, says the boss of Germany’s leading onshore wind developer.



“The fact that we still have these quality issues is something that really worries me,” says Marie-Luise Pörtner, who was head of procurement at Juwi before taking the reins at the Wörrstadt-based company’s wind division.

Vestas “paused” some of its V112 turbines commissioned last year at the 51MW Gross Eilstorf project in Lower Saxony, Germany, while it investigates the cause of a fire in one of the machines in late March. Many other major turbine makers have faced various quality issues in recent years.
