Spending review leaves Severn barrage plans high and dry

The UK government has dropped its support for the Severn barrage, the world's most ambitious tidal-energy scheme.



Instead, it will focus on the "better deal for taxpayers" offered by wind, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and nuclear power.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne published revised versions of the six National Policy Statements put forward by the previous Labour government in November 2009, which are intended to guide the UK towards a low-carbon energy future.
