Project approvals mark 'historic day'

The federal government has approved the first two solar projects ever on US public land, marking a major shift in the way the country will use its natural resources.



Seattle: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar gave final approval to two big projects to be built in the deserts of southern California, calling it an "historic day for America".

Tessera Solar's 709MW Imperial Valley, occupying 6,360 acres (26sq km) of federal land, will use solar dish engines. Chevron Energy Solutions' 45MW Lucerne Valley will use 360,000 PV panels spread across 422 acres.
