Fears for foundations

The hostile environment in the English Channel and the logistics of orchestrating a 70-contractor supply chain are just two of the challenges Vattenfall has had to contend with in developing the Thanet offshore wind farm.

It has also faced two serious engineering issues: "settlements" in the turbine towers' transition pieces (TPs) - the part of the monopile that keeps the tower standing even if the foundations are on uneven ground - and misfiring turbine gearboxes.

In April, Vattenfall saidrepairs would be needed to all foundations on its Kentish Flats and Horns Rev 1 wind farms, off the UK and Denmark, respectively. Investigations of the Thanet farm's monopiles found no sign of theaxial stress that can lead to cracks in the TP and structural instability in Log in to read complete article.
