Global Marine fears the perils of overconfidence

It is easy to assume that the handful of companies performing cable-installation work at Europe's expanding armada of offshore wind farms are unshakeable, as thousands of offshore turbines will be erected in European waters over the next decade.



London: Only a clutch of firms possess the vessels and experience for the extremely specialised tasks of linking up offshore wind farms and plugging their output into the onshore electrical grid. However, Gabriel Ruhan, chief executive of Global Marine Systems, says the offshore cabling sector faces at least one dangerous inclination: overestimation.

"I absolutely buy into the scale of the opportunity of offshore wind in Europe. I'm less convinced of our ability to meet our goals in the timetable we're talking about," Ruhan tells Recharge .
