Gas companies sink steel pipes into the ground, through which they blast a combination of water, sand and noxious chemicals, cracking through the shale rock and gaining access to the hydrocarbons within.

In theory, the steel pipes protect groundwater and aquifers when the gas and fracking liquids are brought to the surface, although the process has been linked, in some cases, to groundwater contamination.
