This pilot project — a partnership with the US Department of Energy (DOE) and manufacturer Xtreme Power — will demonstrate the system’s ability to mitigate the variability of wind energy and contribute to grid stability. Early results have been promising.

In March, the local grid operator, Ercot, lost a generation source, which affected the frequency of power in the system.

“They utilised that battery system to try to compensate for that [loss] — and it compensated very quickly,” says Phil Grigsby, president of DATC, a transmission venture jointly owned by Duke and American Transmission Company.
