Brazil to hold two renewables tenders in 2010

Brazil will hold two renewable energy tenders in 2010 to contract wind, biomass and small hydro power. A biomass-only tender will be held before 9 April, a representative from the energy research centre tells Recharge.

A second tender including wind, biomass and small hydro will be held by the end of 2010. It is unclear whether the three sources of energy will compete under the same price ceiling.

The average tariff for wind at a recent tender was R$148 per megawatt hour (MWh). Last year, at a different tender, biomass and small hydro plants sold at R$144/MWh.

In addition, three other tenders, which are expected to attract hydropower plants, will also be held in 2010. Finally, a tender for the Belo Monte dam is expected before April.
