Michigan, Texas in hunt for GlobalWatt solar module plant
GlobalWatt has narrowed its search for a $177m solar module production plant site to Saginaw, Michigan, and an undisclosed site in Texas.
Officials at the company, based in San Jose, California, say the new plant would create 500 new jobs within five years.
Saginaw, once a key manufacturing location for ailing General Motors, is now known for its high unemployment rate and shuttered automotive assembly and auto parts plants.
Local and state officials are looking at offering GlobalWatt tax credits as one incentive to locate in Saginaw.
The proposed plant would produce solar products for commercial, military and residential applications.
Earlier this year, GlobalWatt and Texas A&M in Corpus Christi , Texas, announced plans to collaborate on photovoltaic technology research and development.
The collaboration that will enable Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to develop advanced clean energy technologies and curriculum. Plans are to develop a turnkey amorphous silicon photovoltaic research and development laboratory on the University campus.
