Trina installs largest ever rooftop solar array in US

Chinese photovoltaic (PV) module maker Trina Solar has installed North America’s largest single-rooftop mounted solar array in New Jersey, consisting of more than 13,400 PV modules.

The array, on top of the Atlantic City Convention Center, will have a 2.4 megawatt (MW) peak capacity, and provide the building with one-quarter of its energy needs. Trina estimates it will save the Center $4.4m on its energy bills over next 20 years.

“The success of this project demonstrates our capacity to deliver large-scale commercial solar solutions to market, as we continue to broaden our distribution networks and project partnership agreements in the US,” says Trina chief executive Jifan Gao.

The Changzhou-based company has made a strong push towards the US market in recent months. In November 2008, the firm announced it would open a sales and marketing base in San Francisco as demand for solar products in the US continues to boom.

Like many solar firms, Trina has struggled to keep sales up in the face of the global recession. Earlier this month, it reported a fourth-quarter 2008 loss of $673,000, compared to a profit of $17.5m during the same period the previous year.

The company lowered its guidance for first-quarter 2009, blaming macroeconomic conditions and a lack of project financing in key European markets.
