The 50MW biomass plant will power Tullis Russell's paper factory in Markinch, Scotland.
Aker, Metso named contractors for RWE's Scottish biomass plant
RWE has named Finland’s Metso and Norway’s Aker Solutions as the key contractors for Scotland’s largest biomass-fired power station, a £200m ($317m) project being built for paper-maker Tullis Russell in Markinch, Fife.
Metso will provide the station’s biomass boiler, while Aker has been brought on board to manage construction, procurement and support services.
The 50-megawatt (MW) plant will replace Tullis Russell’s existing on-site coal-fired power plant, reducing the firm’s carbon footprint by an estimated 70%.
In addition to electricity, the power station will also provide Tullis Russell with heat via a combined-heat-and-power network. It is expected to be operational by 2012.
First announced in 2008, the plant is backed by an £8.1m grant from the Scottish government aimed at creating green jobs.
Stephan Lohr, RWE’s head of biomass, says the facility comes as part of RWE’s wider commitment to invest €1bn a year on renewables. RWE is currently building a 65MW biomass plant in Lincolnshire, and aims to a biomass-fired generation capacity in the UK of 390MW by 2013.
