Contracts for Difference (CfD) schemes are more in demand than ever to aid the renewables rollout but a new paper has warned they are “no silver bullet” for the energy transition and can be inflexible, stifle innovation and even encourage cheaper foreign imports.
CfDs in their modern form were developed and introduced in the UK a decade ago and were used with great effect to help the country develop a world-leading offshore wind sector.
