Siemens bags North America turbine orders worth €600m

German engineering giant Siemens has won six new orders for 250 turbines in the North American market. Siemens says a quarter of the turbines are destined for Ontario in Canada, with the rest to be installed in the US in California, Washington and Wyoming.

The orders for turbines with a total capacirty of 565-megawatts (MW), are worth over €600m, Siemens says.

“These orders prove that the wind industry’s fundamentals are still strong, even in times of an economic downturn,” said Wolfgang Dehen, chief executive of Siemens Energy. “The continuing support for renewable energy from the administrations in the U.S. and Canada is having a positive effect on wind project development.”

A senior Siemens official in the US tells Recharge that the company was not ready to provide further details of the transactions. However, he did say that Siemens won a follow-on order for 60 megawatts of turbines from Cannon Power Corp. for Phase IIA of its Windy Point/Windy Flats wind project in Goldendale, Washington state. Siemens is also supplying all 88 turbines for Phase II there.

Siemens has become the third largest wind turbine supplier in the North American market since entering the wind turbine sector in 2004. In September, Siemens broke ground on its new wind turbine assembly facility in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The 300,000-square-foot wind turbine nacelle facility is scheduled to become operational in autumn 2010 and will employ around 400 green-collar workers. The plant’s annual planned output will be approximately 650 nacelles – or 1,500 megawatts.

Siemens has also recently expanded its blade manufacturing facilities in Fort Madison, Iowa. The company currently employs around 900 people in its North American wind power business.
